What is Directioning Signboard? Why is it important?

Directional signs are the cornerstones of visual communication systems that enable visitors, employees or customers to reach target points smoothly in all kinds of indoor and outdoor spaces. It is almost impossible to ensure effective circulation in large and complex areas such as office complexes, hospitals, shopping malls, university campuses, hotels and transportation terminals without these signs that enable physical navigation. A well-designed guidance system prevents loss of time, increases operational efficiency, and most importantly, provides a positive experience that reduces stress for everyone using the space.

These signs are more than just a simple information transfer tool, they are a silent representative of your organization's brand identity and professional stance. Directional Sign Types and Features

Totem Signs (Freestanding Directors)

They are free-standing structures used at building entrances, parking lots, campus roads or large courtyards. It often contains comprehensive information showing multiple directions and distances. They can be designed as unidirectional or bidirectional. It is produced with outdoor durable materials and night visibility can be provided with optional LED lighting.

Wall Type Direction and Flag Signs

It is the most common type mounted on the wall in corridors, transition points and decision moments. It can be in flat panel form or in "flag" form protruding from the wall. This protrusion allows traffic coming from the side to see the sign earlier. Mounting height and angle must be carefully calculated according to the line of sight.

Ceiling Suspended Direction Signs

It is preferred in large volume areas such as airport terminals, shopping malls and congress centers with high ceilings. It does not take up space and offers excellent visibility from long distances. It is produced with double-sided printing and is suspended from the ceiling with steel ropes or rigid fasteners.

These are schematic plans showing the entire floor or area where the user is located. With the "Your Location" marker, the location is determined, important points and transportation routes are marked. Elevator lobbies are located at main entrances and intersections.

Room and Door Signs

They are the smallest units that define a specific space. Room number, department name or person name can be written. It can be easily updated thanks to magnetic or clip systems. Braille alphabet and embossed text options are offered in accordance with accessibility standards.

Provides dynamic content and personalized route options. Through touch screens, the user selects the point he wants to go and follows the most suitable path that appears on the screen. Content can be easily updated remotely, allowing announcement and advertising integration.

Ground Routing Graphs and Lines

It provides intuitive and uninterrupted guidance, especially in complex structures such as hospitals. Color-coded strips or arrows applied to the floor guide the user step by step to certain sections. It is applied with high-durability special vinyl or epoxy paint.

Material Selection: Durability and Aesthetics

Material selection directly affects the life, appearance and cost of the sign. The most suitable option should be determined according to indoor-outdoor conditions, budget and design concept.

• Aluminum Composite Panel (ACP): Light, rigid and extremely resistant to outdoor conditions. It is coated with powder coating or digital printing. It offers a modern and clean look. It is the most preferred material for directional signs.
• Acrylic (PMMA): Provides a premium aesthetic with transparent, colored or opaque options. Precise shapes can be given by laser cutting and CNC machining. Ideal for edge-lit (lightbox) applications. It creates a perception of high quality in interior spaces.
• Stainless Steel and Aluminum: An industrial, durable and long-lasting option. Glossy, matte or brushed surface finishes are available. Stylish inscriptions can be created with laser cutting and chemical etching. It is frequently used in prestigious projects.
• Laminate and MDF Panels: They are economical interior solutions. It can be digitally printed or foil coated. A clean finish is achieved with edge banding. It is common in offices and educational institutions.
• Glass: Perfect for minimalist and stylish designs. Tempered or laminated safety glass is used. It is visualized by screen printing or digital UV printing. Suitable for corporate centers and luxury venues.
• Wood and Wood-Looking Composites: Create a warm and natural atmosphere. It is processed by CNC. It is preferred by boutique hotels, restaurants and sustainability-oriented brands.

Professional Design Principles and Standards

An effective directional sign should not only be beautiful but also primarily functional.

Information Hierarchy and Simplicity: The most important information (e.g. "EXIT", "URGENT") should be highlighted most prominently. Each sign should contain the minimum information required at that point, and overload should be avoided. The "less is more" principle applies here.

Readability and Viewing Distance: Letter height is determined according to the average distance from which the sign will be read. The general rule of thumb is approximately 10 cm of letter height for every 10 meters of distance. High contrast (e.g. white on black) makes reading easier. Sans-serif fonts (such as Arial, Helvetica) are more suitable for reading from a distance.

Consistency and Visual Language: The same font, color palette, arrow symbols, and layout should be used throughout the system. Color coding is a powerful tool to distinguish different departments (e.g. in a hospital, pediatrics=blue, cardiology=red).

Accessibility Standards: It is essential that disabled individuals can also use the system. In this context:

• Braille alphabet and embossed letters are mandatory for the visually impaired.
• Signs for wheelchair users should be positioned at an appropriate height (usually between 120-160 cm).
• Against color blindness, information transfer should not only depend on color, but should be supported by symbols and text.

Use of International Symbols: Symbols such as toilet, elevator, stairs, telephone are universal and transcend the language barrier. These standard symbols should be preferred whenever possible.

How to Plan an Effective Routing System

A successful system starts with extensive preliminary work.
